What is RSS?
RSS is a good way of keeping up to to date with your favourite web sites. With an RSS link in your browser, you can see as soon as new content is published on the web site publishing the feed without having to visit the web site.
RSS stands for different things according to which web expert you're reading - but most people call it "Really Simple Syndication". Basically, an RSS feed is an automatic electronic process that allows computers to scan web sites for content changes without human intervention.
Accessing an RSS feed
The easiest way to access an RSS feed is via your browser - the latest versions of Internet Explorer and Firefox allow you to add an RSS feed as a bookmark and read the contents in the browser like a web page. Another popular free RSS reader is Google News Reader.
Most sites flag RSS feeds with an icon -
Sometimes the image is a different colour but orange is the standard.
To add the feed to your browser, click on the icon and bookmark the link. When you click on the link in your favourites, the RSS feed is displayed in your browser like any other web page.
Standalone RSS readers are available, and new ones are coming on to the market all the time. Some are free and some cost a few pounds. Browsers are adequate for most web users' needs.
